One thing in our country today that really gets my blood boiling is frivilous litigation. We see it all over the place-someone trying to capitalize on unfortunate events. Today my blood boiled once again when I read about Tess Sosa.
Tess and her 4 year-old daughter, Sophia, along with infant son Damian were passengers aboard the ill-fated US Airways Flight 1549-you know, the one that landed in the Hudson back in January. The plane in almost any other circumstance would have crash-landed, probably killing everyone on board. But instead, the captain managed to miraculously land it safely in the river, allowing everyone to get out mostly unscathed physically.
I have no doubts this was a very traumatic event for all involved-even for those who witnessed it from the ground. But this event, from all appearances, was beyond anyone’s control. It wasn’t pilot error, or a technical failure-it was some migratory geese that sealed the fate of that plane. US Airways, even per Sosa’s admission, has gone through incredible lengths to recover everything possible for the passengers.
The passengers received $5,000 each from the airline (not something US Airways was obligated to do), along with three counseling sessions fully paid. And let’s not forget the obvious-everyone was still ALIVE, and in one piece. But, that’s not enough for Ms. Sosa. Regardless of having insurance, she wants the airline to pay for ALL of her counseling. She claims a large deductible, well, welcome to the same world in which a large portion of Americans now live. Not to mention the approximately 15% that have no health coverage at all.
To Ms. Sosa and those like her, welcome to LIFE. There are no guarantees in life that everything will be perfect, and that when something falls short, someone else will pay you restitution for the wrong you feel they have done you. Things happen-birds poop on cars, and unfortunately, sometimes end up in airplane engines. I guess if you can’t sue the birds, you’ll try whoever else is available at the moment.
Count your blessings, Ms. Sosa. You and your children are ALIVE. Look at it this way-US Airways gave you your LIFE back. Statistically, you should all be dead. It was traumatic, but life is sometimes that way. If anything, YOU owe US Airways for the situation you are in now. And that situation is ALIVE and able to LIVE out your LIFE with your children.
Neither US Airways or anyone else owes you anything for your experience. Why don’t you instead try thanking everyone who helped you, and even God for sparing your lives. It might prove more valuable to your recovery than any number of therapy sessions can provide.
